• Tokyo,Japan: 26.10.2021: PRINCESS MAKO MARRIES COMMONER KEI KOMURO
Princess Mako bowed out of Japan's Royal Family when she married commoner Kei Komuro today.
Princess Mako, 30, who is the first child of Crown Prince Fumihito and Crown Princess Kiko gave up her royal title so that she could marry university sweetheart commoner Kei Komuro,30.
The couple are expected to move to the United States, where Kei who recently graduated from university is working for a law firm.
Under Japan’s controversial law, any female royal family member loses her status on marrying a commoner. This has reignited debate on the male-only succession to the world’s oldest hereditary monarchy.
She is the niece of Emperor Naruhito, and is the eldest grandchild of Emperor Emeritus Akihito and Empress Emerita Michiko.
Japan's strict laws of succession forbid women from ascending to the Chrysanthemum Throne
The Imperial Household Law of 1947 stipulates that only males in the family's male line can ascend to the throne. It means that while Emperor Naruhito has a daughter Aiko, 19, it is his brother the Crown Prince Fumihito who takes precedence. Similarly the Crown Prince's daughters, Mako,30, and Kako, 26, will be passed over in favour of his son Prince Hisahito, 15.
